REVISED Winner of Audition for the DC Blues Festival!

Vote for Your Favorite Band!

The AUDIENCE voted (a DCBS First!) and the band who will perform at the 20th Annual DC Blues Festival on August 30, 2008 is
Country Bunker Blues Band
(also known as TCB Funky Blues Band)!

At the DC Blues Festival Auditions (February 23 at Chick Hall’s Surf Club), we had a great turnout of musicians and fans. Attendees were stamped with a "V" for vote and given the Band Voting Form so they could vote for their favorite band. The list of bands and times was provided in front of the stage and next to the bucket where attendees turned in their votes. Fans wrote the name of their favorite band on the voting form and turned it in at the end of the night. At the end of the night, DCBS counted the votes and congratulated the winner, Funky Club. A follow-up count in the daylight revealed a different winner. Six attendees voted for Funky Blues Band, which was originally incorrectly counted towards Funky Club when it should have gone to Country Bunker Blues Band (we learned later that they have an alternate name TCB, Funky Blues Band). The true winner of the DC Blues Festival opening slot band competition is Country Bunker Blues Band. Congratulations to Country Bunker Blues Band!

DC Blues Society joins Cultural Alliance

The DC Blues Society recently became a member of the Cultural Alliance of Greater Washington, which brings a plethora of benefits to Blues Society members.

Among other things, DCBS members can get health insurance, access to a job bank and discounted tickets through the Cultural Alliance.

For those who aren't familiar with the Alliance, their mission is to work on behalf of artists, cultural arts organizations, and the community to increase support and resources for the arts. More than 300 local arts-related organizations and 700 individuals, including musicians, composers, dancers and filmmakers, are members of the Alliance, which is located at 1436 U Street in Northwest Washington, DC. It can be found on the web at: http://www.cultural-alliance.org/, and the phone number is 202-638-2406.

The Alliance makes group health insurance, including dental, from Kaiser Permanente and Optimum Choice available to its member organizations and individual members.

Blues Society members can also obtain discounted tickets to shows from TICKETplace, an outlet run by the Alliance and the Kennedy Center in the Old Post Office Pavilion that provides discounted, day-of-show tickets for performing arts events in the Washington area.

DCBS Members have free access to the Alliance's JOB bank, an online listing of employment openings in the arts in the metropolitan area. In addition, DCBS members who choose to become Alliance members can get discounted memberships to some of the other member organizations.

The DCBS itself can also take advantage of the the Alliance's Business Volunteers for the Arts program. In this program, business professionals volunteer their expertise to nonprofits arts organizations to help them improve their business practices. Through this program business professionals have benefitted thousands of arts organizations in the DC area.

SAVE Archie Edwards Blues Foundation

This is a very important message and I am sending you this to ask for everyone's help.

How important is Washington DC to the history of acoustic blues. When blues giants Mississippi John Hurt & Skip James were rediscovered it was to DC that they moved.

When it comes to acoustic blues hallowed ground, Archie Edwards Barbershop is one of the most important places you could ever find. Archie opened the Alpha Tonsorial Barber Shop in 1959 and it soon became a favorite place for Skip James & Mississippi John Hurt to stop by and play after they had moved to town. Archie mentored many area players over the years and the barbershop was often the scene of impromptu acoustic jams. It was the location of the first DC Blues Society meeting and Archie was a founding member. When Archie died in 1998 a group of his friends and protégés led by Mike Baytop founded the Archie Edwards Blues Heritage Foundation dedicated to the preservation and teaching of "Piedmont" Blues. The building has been placed for sale by the property manager.

If there is anyone on this mailing list that has ideas or contacts that could be helpful to the foundation in their efforts to save the facility, please make yourself known.

From the AEBF:

After almost 50 years under the management of Archie Edwards and then the Archie Edwards Blues Heritage Foundation, the building which houses the Barbershop is going up for sale, according to the property manager.

The building has been held under the trusteeship of Wachovia Bank and the decision was made to liquidate the holdings.

We, the Foundation, are in the process of exploring options on our response.

Because of the historical and cultural significance of the Barbershop, we are trying to find a way to purchase it. We would appreciate any and all help with
this effort.

We need to raise approximately $250,000 in the very near future to purchase it outright or raise a significant portion of it to get a mortgage.

If anyone can help with this effort or knows someone who can, please contact us as soon as possible.
